The Australian domain authority, auDA, is rolling out a new, direct domain of ‘.au’ which commenced on 24 March 2022.  The introduction of direct domain names means a domain name can now be registered as ‘.au’ rather than, and in addition to, other domains ending in ‘.au’ (for example ‘.com.au’, ‘.net.au’).

Why is priority registration important?

Until 20 September 2022, you will have priority to register the direct domain that is equivalent to your current domain.  If you do not register your ‘.au’ domain name equivalent, the domain name will become available to the general public on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

If you have an existing domain name that ends in ‘.au’ (‘.com.au’, ‘.net.au’ etc.) AND the domain name was registered before 24 March 2022 then you should apply for priority registration.

For example, if you own the domain ‘example.com.au’, you will have until 20 September 2022 to register the domain ‘example.au’. If, after 20 September 2022, you do not register the ‘.au’ equivalent then anyone can register that domain name.

Why should I register the .au domain name?

Because anyone can register the .au domain name, it becomes a security issue as well as an intellectual property issue that a person could register a domain name that looks as though it is legitimate and related to your business. Even if you do not use your shorter ‘.au’ domain name, it will protect your business or organisation from attempts of fraud or other types of cybercrime.

If another party does register your domain name then you can take steps to become the registered owner however this can be a timely and costly process. We recommend that you take preventative action now.

How do I apply?

Provided you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply through your existing domain name register or by visiting any auDA accredited registrar.

If you need any assistance or believe someone has incorrectly applied to register the direct domain name which is equivalent to your current domain, please contact our team.
